techniques

Zen Hands specializes in a number of well-known therapeutic techniques. A specific technique or combination of techniques will be recommended based on your needs, and of course you are welcome to request a technique that you've heard about or had positive results with previously.
The following are brief descriptions of the techniques used at Zen Hands:
Tui Na
Tui Na is Zen Hands' signature treatment. This technique has been used in China for thousands of years, to establish a more harmonious flow of chi through the meridians, allowing the body to heal itself. Tui Na methods include soft tissue massage; acupressure, to directly affect the flow of chi; and manipulation techniques, to realign the muscles, bones, and ligaments.
Sports Tui Na
Sports Tui Na is a variation of Tui Na, designed specifically for athletes. Sessions vary from quick “tune-up” sessions before events; to longer, deeper, post-event work to help move toxins out of the muscles; to rehabilitation work, to help you recover more rapidly following injuries.
Trigger Point Release
This treatment provides dramatic relief from stiff necks, stuck shoulders, and lower back discomfort. The pressure used to release these areas is deep, but the discomfort is over with quickly and usually results in a rapid return to greater range of motion with less pain.
Zen Shiatsu
Zen Shiatsu is a meditative form of the Japanese healing arts. This technique is a full body treatment involving assisted stretches. During treatment, “disharmonies” in your body's energy meridians are sensed; gentle-yet-firm pressure and stretching are applied to re-establish balance, leaving you relaxed and energized.
Although this technique uses firm pressure, it should not hurt. Even if you have experienced painful Shiatsu treatments, you are encouraged to keep an open mind to the benefits of Zen Shiatsu.
Reiki
Reiki is a Tibetan healing art that was lost for centuries until being rediscovered in Japan in the late 1800s. In Reiki therapy, life energy is channeled to your body with very subtle hand pressure from the therapist to strengthen your energy system and promote natural healing. Reiki heals on all levels – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual – to balance the chakras and help return the body to its natural healthy state. This is the very gentlest treatment available at Zen Hands.
Acupressure
Acupressure is often referred to as “acupuncture without needles.” Using the same theory used in acupuncture, acupressure involves stimulation of the energy points with gentle finger pressure instead of needles, to release stuck energy and allow the smooth flow of chi. The treatment is very subtle, but the benefits can be significant.
